We've all heard the saying, "Don't judge a book by a cover." The problem is that we are all human, which means that almost every person that runs into you, judges you before they even know you. It's not right, but it's the way life works. But the thing is, is that we all do it.
If you walk into a library or bookstore and you pick up two books that are the same book, but one cover looks 50 years old, and the other one looks brand new, which one are you going to take? Of course you're going to put the old dusty one back on the shelf and take the bright shiny one. But why? On the inside, they both have the exact same words. So why take the bright shiny one?
What if you go to an electronic store and there is a tv that is brand new in a box, or a tv that's high on a shelf outside of the box where no one can touch it, but it's been sitting out for a while. Let's say that they both come with the same warranty. Which one are you going to take? Of course you're going to take the one that's inside the box. We'd all be silly not to. It's an illustration that we can use with just about everything. So if we all judge books by their covers, shouldn't we at least be aware of our cover? What does your cover say?
Here's the deal. I'm not telling you to focus on the cover. What's inside is a thousand times more important than what's on the outside. You need to have good character and morals. You need to stand for what is right and be a person of integrity. But the outside still matters. Because the outside is what everyone sees. We don't have all the time in the world to pick up every book and read it all the way through. That's why the cover is there. So if your inside is your character, morals, your beliefs and what stand for, then what is your cover made of?
When you first meet a person, what do you notice? You notice how they look, whether they take care of themselves or not. You also notice their clothes, and finally you notice a small piece of their personality; the way they talk, what they talk about, and their attitude. Within a few moments, we subconsciously perceive all of these pieces of information, and they go into a small piece of our brain which does some calculations and spits out a first impression of someone.
One of the first things people notice about you is what you wear. Do you dress like a hobo? Do you dress nice? Do you dress in skimpy clothes to reveal a lot of skin? Do you throw on whatever is in your closet? Do you take time to coordinate and dress nice? Do you think any of these things tell a story about you? What do you hope to portray by the way you dress?
Do you wear too much makeup? Do you go tanning more than you should? Do you ever leave the house without makeup or doing your hair? Does it take you forever to get ready to leave the house? Does the way you dress or get ready give insight into insecurities you have?
Do you smile very much? What do you enjoy talking about to people you first meet? Are you usually quiet or outgoing? Do you often whine or complain? Do you talk bad about other people? Do you wear your emotions on your sleeve? What does it say when someone talks bad about someone behind their back? Is this just an exterior thing, or does it reveal something on the inside? Ever known anyone who never smiles and seems mad or sad all the time? Does that make you want to get to know them more? What about those people who are always happy and in a good mood. Ever notice how they seem to draw people towards them?
Although a cover doesn't tell the whole story, most of the time the cover does give some insight into what's inside. That's the purpose of a cover. It's supposed to sell you on picking up and reading the book. Many times what's on the outside reveals what's really going in on the inside. Almost everything we do has a purpose. Whether we realize it or not, our habits that we form come from our views and beliefs about certain things. Many times people try and cover up their insecurities on the inside by the way they present their outside. Ever stop and wonder why you dress a certain way? Why you do your makeup a certain way? Act a certain way? Talk a certain way? I think that we tend to forget why we started doing many of the things we do. But what does your cover say about you? Does your cover push people away or make people want to find out more about you and who you really are.
Obviously your inside is the most important thing. But if we forget that the only way to get someone to pick us up and learn who we really are is by attracting them in the first place, then they will never have that chance. So take a step back and figure out what your cover is saying. Figure out why you do the things you do, and whether it's an accurate reflection of what's on the inside. Whatever your purpose is, whether it's to get friends, to get in a relationship, or even to sell something, your cover is important. It is the thing that everyone who doesn't know us, judges us by. Does your cover say what you want it to?
